George W. Bush doesn't
seem to understand that the November Elections were a signal of
a negative verdict on the Iraq War. Or perhaps he really doesn't
care. And plans to treat the newly elected Democratic Majority
with the same distain he has been showing the Supreme Court.
On January 10th, this
past Wednesday, President Bush said he was sending 21,600 additional
troops to Iraq. Many are calling this blatant escalation of the
War the "Surge".
Most Democrats and
some Republicans see the surge, which opponents look upon as a
soothing label for an outright escalation of an unpopular war,
as a rebuke to the majority whose November ballots signaled a
negative verdict on the Iraq War.
The time to stop this
madness is now. Not next month or next year during the Presidential
Elections. Bush can't run again, so quit worrying about pleasing
the fool. Our representatives in the House and Senate have an
obligation to enact the will of We The People, not try to appease
a liar and puffed up wannabee dictator.
These representatives
rake in the money contributed by you, and you, and me, while millions
of us don't make enough to cover our living expenses. Proponents
of the new minimum wage proposal herald it as a living wage. But
We The People need something more than just a living wage that
still falls short, we need to have something to look forward to
in life.
They take our money
and our vote and give us hype and promises. Oh, they look fine
in their slick business suits and greased up lips, from which
their slimy lies emerge. The issues like the Iraq War are forgotten
in the frenzy of the elections, and even more so in the aftermath
as they jockey for positions of power.
People ask how come
we can't pull ourselves together, how come we don't gang up on
these reps? It's quite simple. If you really want to know, then
pickup a mirror and look long and hard at the one who allows this
farce to continue year after year, election after election.
Thursday night the
day after the President's speech, thousands took to street corners
around the country to protest the "surge". Few paid
attention. Why? Because we are not united in our efforts. Sure
there were pockets of WeDems, MoveOn, DFA, PDA, Impeachment groups
and more who yelled, waved signs and lit candles, but it was a
feeble
Hezbollah, and its
allies turned out hundreds of thousands of followers in downtown
Beirut, a city with a population of about 1.8 million, marching
to the gates of the government headquarters, in a feat of mobilization
and discipline that I, for one, admire.
Yet here in the USA
with 300 million plus we talk about a few thousand protesters?
Do you see the problem?
If not, once again look in the mirror.
